Pine St. 403 543-3101 At least 89 injured in riots initiated by death of Arab The Associated Press JERUSALEM Soldiers firing live ammunition and rubber bullets fatally shot a Palestinian man and at least 89 people were hurt in riots set off by the death of an Arab detainee. Arab reports put the number of injured in the Gaza Strip violence at 120, which would make it one of the highest daily figures during the 34- month-old Palestinian uprising.

The tensions clashes since the Oct. underscored 8 a Temple rise in Arab Mount killings of 20 Arabs and subsequent stabbing deaths of three Israelis in Jerusalem. The unrest began after soldiers informed the family of Attiyah Abdel Atti Zanin, 36, in the Gaza village of Beit Hanoun that he had hanged himself in prison. Zanin was detained 13 days ago for questioning about activism in the Palestine Liberation Organization, Israeli and Arab reports said. His body was found in Gaza City prison Friday night, dangling from a rope made of Prison Services spokeswoman Shulamit Meiri said.

She said the authorities believed the death was a suicide since he was alone in a cell and there were no other signs of violence on the body. But Zanin's family demanded an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Rumors also spread quickly through the village of 11,000 that Zanin had been killed by soldiers, spurring youths to take to the streets where they stoned Israeli troops, Arab reports said. Troops opened fire, killing Mohammed Izzat Abdullah el Bassiouny, 36, of a bullet wound to the head, the reports added. The army said Bassiouny was 29.

He was the 771st Palestinian to be killed by Israelis in the uprising in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, which home to: million. Palestinians and some 70,000 Jewish settlers. Another 293 Arabs have been killed by fellow Palestinians as alleged collaborators with Israel, and 55 Israelis and foreigners have been killed. Riots spread from Hanoun to six: neighborhoods and refugee camps in the vicinity of nearby Gaza City, the reports added. Witnesses said soldiers sprayed tear gas out of helicopters and used gravel-throwing machines in some spots to contain the violence.

The army said 89 Palestinians were injured in: Gaza, most of them moderately or slightly. injured. The military said the shooting was in response to' "numerous riots," in Gaza. Four villages and refugee camps in Gaza were placed under curfew. Arab reports said 102 Palestinians were wounded in these clashes.

Of these, 49 were struck by live ammunition and 48 by rubber-coated metal bullets, the Arab reports said, citing hospital officials. Another four Palestinians suffered beating injuries. A 4-year-old boy, Zoheir Abu. El Nur, of Jebalya, was reported injured seriously in the head by stones from an army gravel-throwing machine. He was rushed unconscious to Tel Hashomer Hospital near Tel Aviv, Arab reports said.

Violence also broke out later Saturday in in Gaza's southern reaches. Assailants threw a firebomb at an Israeli military patrol and troops opened fire wounding 17 Palestinians, Arab reports said. Royal Sha Shakespeare Company draws curtain on pe performances The Associated Press LONDON The Royal Shakespeare Company, which had two smash hits with Les Miserables and Nicholas Nickleby, called its curtains in London on Saturday in a cost-cutting move highlighting tough times for the British arts. Following its sellout evening performance of the play Singer, the company closed its two London theaters at the Barbican Center until March 1991. It will coma.

tinue its season in two theaters at Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare's birthplace. "With your help and God willing, we'll be back," the company's artistic director, Terry Hands, told the Barbican audience. It was the first time the statesubsidized company has taken such a step. The event was greeted with a mixture of sadness as well as applause for the company's determination. "Let's lift a glass to, if you like, the future and our return," Hands told the audience before they went out to the lobby to join cast members for one last drink in London this year.

The move is expected to save $2.53 million for the company, now $5.85 million in debt. The company is the largest of many theater organizations around Britain, to be fighting for survival in today's cost recessionary climate. On Monday, Vanessa Redgrave, Glenda Jackson and Dame Peggy Ashcroft were among the British stars to launch a nationwide campaign at London's Albery Theatre to spotlight the financial woes of the theater industry nationwide. The Shakespeare company receives annual subsidies of $11.8 million. It says it needs $19.3 million to be in the black.

Hands consistently argued that the company's grant has kept pace neither with inflation, running at 10.9 percent, nor with the specific recommendations of an independent the company was underfunded. Annual worldwide revenue from the musical Les Miserables, which opened at the Barbican in October 1984, brings the company nearly $2 million a year, but Hands points out that the show won't run forever. Amid widespread sadness at the company's closure in London depriving the city of up to six plays is some speculation that the company has, in part, been its own worst enemy. Its case "is not helped by espousing the palpably second rate," David Lister wrote in The Independent of Moscow Gold, the company's new play about Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev.

Howard Brenton and Tariq Ali's play, a satire with a cast of 33, opened Sept. 26 to bad reviews and has performed poorly at the box offices. Moscow Gold was one of: three new company plays to receive blistering reviews in London this year.
